Sofía Espinoza Álvarez es autora/co-autora de publicaciones científicas en una amplia gama de temas, incluyendo varios libros académicos. Su investigación ha sido publicada en revistas académicas nacionales e internacionales incluyendo:, incluyendo: (Criminal Law Bulletin, 2014); “Neoliberalism, Criminal Justice, and Latinos: The Contours of Neoliberal Economic Thought and Policy on  Criminalization.” (Latino Studies, 2016) y “Capital Punishment on Trial:  Who Lives, Who Dies, Who Decides—A Question of Justice?”  Criminal Law Bulletin, Capital Punishment on Trial:  Who Lives, Who Dies, Who Decides—A Question of Justice?” (Criminal Law Bulletin, 2014).   

Álvarez ha mantenido una activa investigación y agenda de publicación, publicando varios libros académicos, capítulos de libros y artículos de revistas, incluyendo varias obras académicas en temas diversos. Actualmente, Álvarez está investigando los servicios públicos, implicaciones y consecuencias de los movimientos de control social transnacionales del siglo XXI, como la guerra contra las drogas, la guerra contra los inmigrantes, y la guerra contra el terrorismo. Debido al actual debate sobre la inmigración, en la actualidad, Álvarez está por publicar un nuevo libro académico. Su libro, Immigration and the Law:  Race, Citizenship, and Social Control Over Time, detalla la dinámica histórica de EE.UU. sobre la política de inmigración.

En su próximo libro, Latinos and the U.S. Legal System:  Laws that Wound—A Call for a Balanced System (2017), Álvarez y su co-autor explorarán y delinean las realidades étnicas de los latinos y el sistema legal estadounidense, e ilustran la importancia de las cuestiones fundamentales, como la representación.
